Doctors have been listening to patients’ hearts, lungs, and intestines using stethoscopes, for over 200 years to assess their health and heartbeat. René Laennec, a French physician, invented the first stethoscope which was just an improvised hollow tube all the way back in 1816, because he was embarrassed about placing his ear on a woman’s chest to listen to her heartbeat. Stethoscopes have become a hallmark of the medical profession, with their disc-shaped resonator and two tubes connecting to earpieces. Such a simple tool and yet it has saved so many lives.
